About This Project

Boucher Street East, Meaford – Structural Steel Beam Installation in a 120‑Year‑Old Home

The Boucher Street East project in Meaford was a rare combination of structural risk, technical difficulty, and logistical complexity. The general contractor—someone we had collaborated with many times on Toronto projects—reached out because they could not find a qualified structural crew in the Meaford area. The local market is small, with limited demand for advanced structural work, and most available contractors were “DIY‑handyman” types. Neither the homeowner nor the GC was willing to risk the integrity of a 120‑year‑old home, or the life safety of unqualified workers chasing a quick payday.

Scope of Work – Removing a Double Brick Wall in a Century Home

The project required the removal of a double brick structural wall and supporting it with a 12‑inch steel beam and custom steel posts. The home had an addition built decades earlier, and the wall in question extended all the way up to the roofline.

Because the original cement mortar was crumbling and the brickwork was unstable, the wall was at risk of collapsing at any moment. This made the temporary support phase absolutely critical.

Safe Temporary Support System

Given the age and fragility of the structure, we designed and installed a high‑safety temporary support system to stabilize the home before any demolition began. This step protected both the workers and the building, ensuring the structure remained stable throughout the beam installation.

Logistical Challenges – Sourcing Steel in a Remote Market

A second major challenge was sourcing steel in the Meaford area. Local suppliers had exorbitant pricing, and availability was limited. To keep the project feasible, we transported all steel beams and materials from Toronto.

Our implementation crew stayed in Meaford for a full week, completing the project safely, efficiently, and to engineered standards.

Final Result

The project transformed a structurally unsafe, century‑old wall into a fully supported, engineered steel beam system. The home is now safe, stable, and ready for the next phase of renovation—without the risk of collapse that had been present for decades.

HomeStars

I was very pleased with the strategies used by Aldo to deal with removal of a brick wall in a 150-year-old house, and the quality of the finished work. This was the central part of the whole renovation, and now I have the confidence it was done right. The Aldo team also worked late into the night twice to get the job finished on schedule.
